For qualified applicants there are two programs available for disability benefits from Social Security in Kansas City; Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Income (SSDI). The programs are quite different; SSI is for people that have limited means whereas SSDI is designed for qualified workers that suffer from a disability.

To qualify for SSDI the individual must have a disability that will keep him or her from performing meaningful work for 12 months minimum, once approved, benefits will continue until a return to work or when the person reaches retirement age, the monthly amount stays the same upon retirement.

Who is eligible?

To qualify for SSDI, the disabled applicant must have accumulated a number of work credits. The maximum number of work credits that can be earned annually is four; the total number of credits that are necessary to qualify for benefits depends on the age of the applicant when he or she becomes disabled.

Certain family members may also qualify for benefits under Social Security in Kansas City based on the work record f the wage earner. Benefits may be available to a spouse, the widow or widower or divorced spouse or an unmarried chiliad. Very strict rules apply for family members that may benefit.

What is disability in the eyes of Social Security?

The SSA has a number of very strict rules that define disability. SSDI does not pay for partial disability or for a disability that is not expected to last a year; only full disability for 12 months or more will be considered.

Although there is a 12 month rule, it is always a good idea to make application for benefits as soon as –possible as long as your physician will state that the disability, in his or her opinion, will last for more than a year.

Social Security in Kansas City pays benefits for those that are physically or mentally disabled and can meet specific rules. To discuss your particular situation you are invited to contact Grundy Disability Group, LLC.
